Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease marked by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which over time can lead to serious complications affecting the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. In the United States, diabetes remains one of the most widespread chronic health conditions, affecting over 53 million adults as of 2025. That's nearly 1 in 6 adults, with 15.8% living with the disease—including both diagnosed and undiagnosed cases.
The prevalence of diabetes in the U.S. has surged due to a combination of factors: obesity, sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and limited access to preventive care in underserved communities. Alarmingly, 1 in 4 obese adults now has diabetes, and the condition disproportionately affects older adults, with nearly 29.2% of Americans aged 65 and older living with diabetes.

The main risk factors for prediabetes include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, family history of diabetes, and increasing age. Changes in lifestyle and dietary patterns in the USA have contributed to the rising prevalence of prediabetes.
